Position Overview:

Orchestra Iowa School is seeking a dynamic and passionate choral director to lead our Harmony and Odyssey choirs for the 2025–26 season. These ensembles provide early vocal instruction and ensemble experience for young singers.

  • Harmony Choir is designed for Kindergarten and 1st grade students, focusing on foundational vocal skills, musical play, and group singing.
  • Odyssey Choir is for 2nd and 3rd grade students and emphasizes vocal development, part-singing, and preparation for future ensemble participation.

Both choirs rehearse weekly, on Sundays, at the Orchestra Iowa School in downtown Cedar Rapids and perform at select events throughout the season.

The director will lead rehearsals, select age-appropriate repertoire, and create a welcoming and engaging environment that fosters musical growth and confidence in young singers.

This is a part-time position with rehearsals held weekly at the Orchestra Iowa School in downtown Cedar Rapids. The director will work closely with our education team to plan and lead rehearsals, select repertoire, and prepare students for public performances.


Key Responsibilities:

  • Direct weekly rehearsals for Harmony and Odyssey choirs (Odyssey 1:15-2:15pm, Harmony 2:30-3:15pm on Sundays)
  • Select appropriate and engaging repertoire for each ensemble
  • Prepare students for scheduled performances throughout the season
  • Foster a welcoming, supportive, and educational environment for young singers
  • Communicate regularly with families and Orchestra Iowa School staff
  • Attend planning meetings and collaborate on scheduling and logistics

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in music, music education, choral conducting, or a related field (or equivalent experience)
  • Previous experience directing children’s or youth choirs
  • Strong communication and organizational skills
  • Ability to engage and inspire young singers
  • Piano proficiency is a plus but not required

Schedule:

  • Rehearsals begin Fall 2025
  • Includes a few weekend performances
  • Planning work may begin during summer as needed
