CEDAR RAPIDS, IA – February 2015 – Orchestra Iowa and Ballet Quad Cities present Tchaikovsky’s Sleeping Beauty on Saturday, April 11, at 7:30 PM and Sunday, April 12, at 2:30 PM at the Paramount Theatre in Cedar Rapids.
Orchestra Iowa and Ballet Quad Cities bring to life the classic fairy tale of Sleeping Beauty. Enter the world of Princess Rose, the Good Fairy of the Forest, the evil Carabosse and a cast of captivating characters, as they enchant audiences with the magic of dance and music.
“Bringing you the fairest of them all, Ballet Quad Cities and Orchestra Iowa add life to the classic fairytale Sleeping Beauty,” said Orchestra Iowa Music Director Timothy Hankewich. “The fresh choreography and Tchaikovsky’s classical compositional style create a lively pair that accentuate the beauty of music and ballet. This production full of lost princesses, beautiful fairies and a handsome prince is perfect for young families or a lovely night out”.
First choreographed by the great Marius Petipa, Courtney Lyon presents a fresh interpretation of the classic story. The original ballet’s focus was undeniably on the two main conflicting forces of good represented by the Fairy and evil represented by Carabosse. Tchaikovsky’s composition features two distinct melodic themes representing each of them which run through the entire ballet. This thematic material serves as an important thread to the underlying plot. Act III of the work takes a complete break from the two melodic themes and instead places focus on the individual characters of the various court dances. This provides a light contrast to the previous acts and sparks a new life in the closing pieces to the masterpiece.

Children 18 and under are eligible for half price tickets, college students are eligible for $10 tickets and group pricing is available. Orchestra Iowa is recognized as the state’s premier symphony orchestra, under the direction of Timothy Hankewich, now in his ninth year as Music Director.
