The Director of Education & Community Engagement, is responsible for the strategic planning, implementation, administration, and evaluation of all education and community engagement programs of Orchestra Iowa. The Director of ECE is also responsible for managing the Orchestra Iowa School. The successful candidate will be an innovative and entrepreneurial individual who can design, implement, and evaluate the Orchestra’s education and community partnership programs. They will welcome new opportunities to explore creative partnerships through the Corridor and will actively identify new recruitment and retention strategies to bolster the Orchestra Iowa School.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Educational Programming (50%)
  • Develop curriculum for Orchestra Iowa ensembles for varied outreach services, including Music in the Schools, Pied Piper concerts, STEAM initiative, and residencies; explore growth opportunities for each in alignment with Orchestra Iowa’s strategic priorities
  • Collaborate with school districts to develop educational service contracts and fulfill all expectations
  • In partnership with Music Director, create and implement engaging programs for Orchestra Iowa Youth Concerts
  • Establish and build relationships with school districts, universities, community music schools, and other parties with shared interests
  • Partner with Operations team to develop and manage all guest artist master classes and residency programs
  • Attend concerts of local school groups, festivals and contests, and serve as a liaison between Orchestra Iowa and community education programs
  • Oversee Fifth Grade Fiddles curriculum and logistics
Orchestra Iowa School (40%)
  • Provide leadership necessary to grow Orchestra Iowa School programs and total enrollment
  • Direct all School activity, ensuring successful execution of all logistical, HR, and administrative requirements
  • Participate in budget creation and oversight to ensure meeting determined goals
  • Identify, recommend, and oversee implementation of new program development
  • Grow tuition-based program participation by developing and supporting extensive recruitment efforts
  • Actively recruit new faculty to teach lessons and lead programs
  • Review and evaluate faculty and program effectiveness annually
  • Identify and execute opportunities for efficient usage of Orchestra Iowa School facilities, including potential to rent studio space and rehearsal space
Administrative (10%)
  • Develop and monitor program standards, outcomes, and evaluation metrics for all Orchestra Iowa programs and projects. Report on community impact, and identify and interview individuals to collect personal testimonials
  • Identify opportunities for increasing funding available to Orchestra Iowa’s education and community engagement programs. Collaborate with Development team to submit grants, proposals, and solicitations to prospects
  • Participate in rotation of concert duties for Orchestra Iowa performances
  • Perform other duties as assigned
REQUIRED SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE
  • Passion for the performing arts a must
  • Bachelor’s degree in music, music education, or related field required
  • Curriculum development experience strongly preferred
  • Experience teaching privately or in a classroom setting preferred
  • Minimum of 3 to 5 years relevant experience
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office
  • Highly developed oral and written communication skills
  • Must possess outstanding attention to detail and be well-organized and able to manage competing projects simultaneously
  • Must be responsible, reliable, able to work weekends and evenings
  • Must be a team player and an enthusiastic collaborator

Its 68 professional musicians present more than 180 classical, ballet, popular, chamber and educational performances each season, many of which are heard on Iowa Public Radio and seen on Iowa Public Television. Orchestra Iowa currently has an annual operating budget of approximately $3 million, operates under a collective bargaining agreement with the American Federation of Musicians and is a member of the League of American Orchestras and the Regional Orchestra Players Association (ROPA).
