PROKOFIEV Lieutenant Kije Suite LISZT Piano Concerto No. 1 in E-flat Major RIMSKY-KORSAKOV Scheherazade
Undeniably Slavic in character and feel, 1,001 Arabian Nights explores the storytelling mastery of the Russian culture. Rimsky-Korsakov’s Scheherazade weaves through music the tale of Queen Scheherazade’s clever storytelling scheme to save her life by telling cliffhanger stories every night for 1,001 nights. Originally written for the film of the same name, Prokofiev’s Lieutenant Kije Suite stands as one of the composer’s most enduring and frequently performed works.
German pianist Andreas Klein has distinguished himself as a dynamic and compelling performer with his command of a wide range of tonal colors and imaginative interpretations. The New York Times declared him “A fascinating artist with all the indispensable qualities: temperament, taste, touch, tone, the four T’s of pianism” and “A pianist who makes silences sound like music.” Andreas joins Orchestra Iowa to perform Franz Liszt’s tremendously challenging and immensely entertaining Piano Concerto No. 1.
